In a culture that glorifies hustle and burnout, self-care is often framed as indulgence. But for believers, self-care isn’t about self-obsession—it’s about stewardship. Your body, mind, and spirit are gifts from God. Caring for them is one way you honor Him.
A Christian self-care routine keeps God at the center while helping you rest, reset, and grow. Here’s how to build one that’s sustainable, grace-filled, and rooted in faith.
1. Start With God, Not Productivity
Before you plan your day, invite God into the process. Ask Him what areas of your life need restoration—your thoughts, your schedule, your rest, or your relationships.
Simple prayer:
“Lord, show me how to care for myself in a way that honors You. Help me listen to Your wisdom and not the pressure of this world.”
This shifts self-care from a checklist into a relationship.
2. Build a Daily Rhythm With God
Your routine doesn’t need to be long—it needs to be consistent. Consistency is the key to making something stick. These are some things I found easy to incorporate into my self-care routine.
I pray as soon as I open my eyes. Check in with God before you check your phone.
5–10 minutes of Scripture Reading and/or a Daily Devotion like this one: Self-Care Devotional
Listen to Worship music while getting ready or your morning commute to work.
A gratitude prayer before bed thanking God for another day to make a difference, love and be loved.
Small habits done daily shape your spiritual health over time.
3. Care for Your Body as God’s Temple
Your body isn’t just physical—it’s spiritual stewardship.
Get enough sleep (rest is biblical)
Drink water and eat healthy foods
Move your body gently (walks, stretching, light workouts)
Take breaks when you’re overwhelmed
Caring for your body isn’t vanity—it’s obedience and gratitude.
4. Guard Your Mind and Emotional Health
A Christian self-care routine includes mental and emotional boundaries:
Limit social media when it drains your peace
Journal your prayers and worries
Replace negative self-talk with God’s truth and positive affirmations.
Spend time with people who point you to Christ
What you allow into your mind shapes your spiritual life.
5. Schedule Rest Without Guilt
God designed rest. Even Jesus withdrew to quiet places to pray. Rest is not laziness—it’s obedience.
Build in:
A weekly rest day
Tech-free moments
Quiet time with God
Enjoyable, life-giving activities. Maybe explore a new hobby with a group of fellow believers.
Rest restores your ability to love God and others well.
6. Keep It Simple and Grace-Filled
A God-centered self-care routine isn’t about perfection. Some days you’ll miss your quiet time. Some weeks you’ll feel off track. Grace is part of the routine too.
Progress > perfection.
Faithfulness > performance.
7. Example of a Simple Christian Self-Care Routine
Morning:
Short prayer + Scripture
Deep breath before starting your day
Midday:
5-minute gratitude pause
Drink water, step outside if possible
Evening:
Reflect: Where did I see God today?
Pray and release the day to Him
Reflection Question:
What is one small habit you can add this week to make your self-care more God-centered?
Pray with me:
Dear Lord, thank you for another day. I pray that you will show me the areas of my life where I need to extend more grace to myself and to others. Help me remember self-care is stewardship and not selfishness. Remind me of my purpose and give me the strength I need for today because tomorrow is not promised. In Jesus Name, Amen.
