Day 19 – Finding Sabbath Rest in a Modern World

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

We live in a culture that celebrates hustle. Busyness is worn like a badge of honor. The busier we are the more important we feel and the less replaceable we seem to others. Our phones ding constantly, our to-do list never stops growing and rest is something we feel like we can’t afford. However, God clearly commands us to rest. He set the example Himself in Genesis.

Genesis 2:2-3

2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

In scripture, rest isn’t just a reward for finishing everything—it’s a rhythm God designed for our lives. From the very beginning, God modeled rest in Genesis. The biblical Sabbath wasn’t just about stopping work; it was about stopping to be with God. It was a holy pause—a reminder that our worth isn’t measured by how much we can get done in a day.

When Jesus says He offers rest, He isn’t just talking about sleep or a day off. He’s offering soul-deep rest—the kind that quiets anxiety, resets our hearts, and recenters our lives around Him. Sabbath rest in a modern world might not look like it did in the bible, but the heart of it still applies: intentional space to step away from working and step into God’s presence.

Sabbath is resistance. It pushes back against the lie that you are only valuable when you are useful. It says, “I trust God enough to stop.”

What keeps you from resting—fear of falling behind, guilt, or pressure to always be available?

What would Sabbath rest look like in your current season of life?

How might trusting God change the way you view rest?

I encourage you to really ponder on these things and remind yourself, nothing is more important than your relationship with God. Resting in Him is essential to having a healthy relationship with Him.

Try these small pauses today:

Silence your notifications for one hour.

Take a slow walk without your phone.

Spend 10 minutes in quiet prayer or Scripture.

Say no to one unnecessary commitment.

Pray with me:

Dear Lord, You designed me to rest but I don’t take the time out to properly do so. Forgive me for resisting and teach me to slow down. Help me release the pressure to perform and receive the rest You freely offer. Restore my soul and realign my heart with You. In Jesus Name, Amen.
