Day 13 – Letting Go of Perfectionism as a Christian

2 Corinthians 12:9

"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness".

This verse was spoken by God to the Apostle Paul when Paul was pleading for the removal of a “thorn in the flesh”. Most likely signifying a painful trial or weakness. Have you ever suffered with something like an addiction or had to deal with a certain painful situation that just wouldn’t seem to resolve itself no matter how hard you prayed? I know I have. I’ve spent years praying over the same thing… and yet… it remained.

This verse reminds us that God is not looking for us to be perfect, He is looking for our obedience.  His divinity is perfect, so we don’t have to be. When we confess our weakness and our imperfections before the Lord it gives Him the opportunity to step in and let His strength be perfected in our weakness.  He is the one that provides necessary support and power to sustain us through life’s most difficult trials.

We no longer have to beat ourselves up for not getting it right, for not being perfect, for praying over and over again with no results. God’s grace abounds in our difficulties. It isn’t just about forgiveness but it’s a sustaining strength that fills the gap between need and ability. We have to stop looking at the fact that we aren’t perfect as a bad thing and start recognizing it for what it is… a chance for God’s power to most clearly be displayed through us.

The best part - Because His grace is sufficient, we can boast when we go through trials. We can tell others and most importantly ourselves - God’s got this. His power is made perfect in my weakness.

His grace beats our works 100% of the time.

Pray this with me:

Dear Lord, I struggle with not being good enough. I struggle with ______________ on a daily basis and I know you know all. I invite you into the situation and ask that your grace would take over and that you would help me to let go and let you. I surrender my imperfections to you so that your strength would abound. In Jesus Name, Amen.
