Day 8 - How Christians Can Care for Their Mental Health

Emotional and mental self care are vital to living a healthy life. God tells us over and over again in scripture to protect our minds. How do we go about doing this? I'll be honest, it's hard at first, but if you stay consistent in your efforts, you will feel so much better.

I'm going to share some scripture with you and I want to encourage you to go seek some for yourself.  Get that journal ready and let's dig in.

Speaking the Word over yourself, especially your mind, is a powerful way to protect your mental health. Knowing who you are in Christ and believing it are key factors in maintaining your mental well being.

Isaiah 54:17

17 No weapon formed against you shall prosper,

And every tongue which rises against you in judgment

You shall condemn.

This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,

And their righteousness is from Me,”

Says the Lord.

2 Corinthians 10:5

5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Ephesians 6:17

17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

A great way to use these scriptures is to say: “ I am a child of God. No weapon formed against me shall prosper. I rebuke negative thoughts from myself and ones that others would try to use to deceive me. I take captive these thoughts and will not let them grow in my mind. God has given me a helmet of salvation to protect myself. In Jesus Name, Amen.”

I read a daily devotion written by Joyce Meyer titled Power Thoughts. And just like God, and His amazing timing, the devotion for Feb. 8th (which is when this will get posted) is about having a positive attitude. She goes on to explain that if you focus on thinking positive things you will feel more positive… and the same goes for the negative. Makes sense when you think about it… but you and I both know it is harder to actually do. Don’t beat yourself up if you start trailing off down a negative thought train. Recognize it, take it captive and choose something happy you can focus on.

Pray this with me:

Dear Lord, thank you for giving me Your Word. Thank you for giving me a way to choose what I think about and redirect my thoughts. I pray that you would protect my mind, help me to focus on you and what is good. Remind me in my darkest moments that I am not alone and that you have provided a way for me to protect my mental health. I love you Lord, In Jesus Name, Amen.
