1 Corinthians 6:19-20
19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
Have you ever really thought about your body not being your own? The fact that it really isn’t yours… it belongs to God? It is another amazing gift He has given us. What do you do with a special gift someone has given you? You take care of it.
My daughter gave me this beautiful hand made prayer box. She took her time making it exactly how she wanted it to look. She wrote encouraging words and verses on it and then gave me instructions on how I was supposed to use it. I have it displayed very safely on the bookcase in my family room. I make sure to use it the way she instructed and I don’t let just anyone pick it up. I want to take care of it.
Does that sound familiar? Do you have a special gift someone has given you that you make sure to take extra special care of? News flash… Your body is your gift from God. He wants you to take extra special care of it. I can’t imagine how hurt my daughter would be if I broke her special prayer box, or if I let someone mishandle it and then it broke. Her heart would be so sad and my heart would be broken too. I imagine that is how God feels when he sees us abusing these beautiful bodies he has given us.
Our last two weeks of devotions focused on our inside and this week we are going to focus on our outside. Assuming you are making your quiet time with God a priority, it is time to incorporate some things to take care of your flesh. This is the self-care regimen that you are probably more familiar with.
I want to encourage you today to really focus on how important your physical body is to God. You’ve probably never thought about over-eating, over indulging, speaking harshly to yourself in the mirror as something that breaks God’s heart… but you know what… it does. As we move into the week we talk about some easy things we can incorporate into our daily schedule that will honor our bodies and by doing so we will honor God.
Pray with me:
Dear Lord, thank you for this reminder today, that my body is not my own, it is yours. Help me to take better care of myself. I give my bad habits, my over indulgences, my negative thoughts about my body to you. I pray for your strength as I learn to take better care of myself. I want to love my body the same way you do. In Jesus Name, Amen.
