Luke 10:38-42
At the Home of Martha and Mary
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” 41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
I’m sure you remember the story of Mary and Martha. I always felt sorry for Martha. I had been her. I was always planning, cleaning, working, shopping, running errands and anything and everything else that needed to get done. I felt so alone at times. And - I would get frustrated when I would see others sitting around having a good time while I was the one making sure they were having a good time. It was exhausting. I had heard the story of Mary and Martha and I knew exactly what Martha was feeling. But - when I realized that Martha was truly missing out on something more than just having a good time - She was missing out on the intimate presence of Jesus Himself - I knew things needed to change.
How many times have we missed His presence? His voice? His blessing? Because we were too busy to sit still. We mask it with words like responsibilities and even though this is true, we need God’s peace to keep us sane…lol. God knows us… He knows the nature of women. He created us. We are the help mates. So what does He do… He comes to us. We don’t have to go on expensive women’s retreats, we don’t have to clear out an entire day of chores, we just have to invite Him into our lives. Isn’t it amazing that time and time again, in the bible, God comes to the women. He came to Martha’s house, He came to the woman at the well, He came to Mary and the bleeding women. God brings His peace to us through His Word and the presence of His Holy Spirit. It’s a free gift. We just need to sit still long enough to receive it.
There will always be chores to do, events to plan, a job to go to… something to distract us. Don’t worry about those things. They can wait. What can’t wait is your peace. I want to encourage you today to sit still and receive God’s peace in your life. Quiet your mind, your thoughts… turn your phone off - and rest in His peace. You will be so glad you did. Life will always be busy. Just remember God will always be there to be your peace in the midst of it all.
Pray this with me:
Dear Lord, when life gets too busy and I am too distracted, please quicken my Spirit to take a time out and rest in you. Remind me that in your presence is peace and that you desire for me to walk with you and to walk in Your peace. Help me to always choose you first even when I feel overwhelmed by life’s busyness. In Jesus Name, Amen.
