Day 1 - What is Biblical Self-Care?

Biblical Self-Care is stewardship not selfishness. When I first started this journey, God gave me the scripture, Matthew 22:39, (NIV) “And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” The second part of this verse gets overlooked a lot. We see the love your neighbor part, but forget to love ourselves. Just like the 10 Commandments, God is giving us clear instructions in this verse on how to govern our lives. He commands that we love ourselves. It isn’t selfish to take care of yourself. Taking care of ourselves God’s way, means we are taking care of our body, our mind, our Spirit and our soul. There is a godly way to go about this and for the next 30 days, we are going to do this together. For the next 30 days, I will be sharing with you, a 30 day guide on godly self-care. You can sign up below to make sure you don’t miss a day.

Godly self-care involves resting, establishing healthy boundaries, and nurturing spiritual health through prayer and scripture, following Jesus’ example of withdrawing to rest and recharge. This type of self-care leaves you feeling refreshed, full of peace and joy and mentally strong enough to handle life’s daily challenges.

Worldly self-care focuses on personal pleasure, material comfort, and individualistic stress reduction. It often prioritizes internal feelings of happiness (self induced) over spiritual needs. It frequently centers on consumption—such as spa days, luxury purchases, or entertainment—as a means to cope with life's pressures. Spa days and shopping… sounds like a woman’s dream. And in moderation it can absolutely be incorporated into your self-care routine. However, it can be easy to get caught up in these pricey ventures. It seems fun and fulfilling until you are broke and feeling worse than when you started. I’ve bought into this myself. I have so many products that I’ve purchased off of TikTok, trying to get that healthy skin glow….Pause before you do it - I’m going to share a little secret with you. Nothing makes you shine brighter than the love of Jesus radiating from the inside out.

And - for the next 30 days, we are going to pray, rest, recharge and learn how to glow from the inside out. This will lead us down a path of loving ourselves, so that in return, we can love others and serve them without getting burned out or feeling guilty.

Pray this with me:

Dear Lord, help me to believe that taking care of myself is not selfish. Help me to embrace your plan for my life by teaching me healthy habits. Open my eyes to recognize ways to take care of myself every day. Help me to stay consistent and allow me the time I need to spend with you every day. In Jesus Name, Amen.
